Users Discontinuing Slimming Injections Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a leading health publication points out that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals buying such medications need to be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a return to original mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists point out that people who lose weight through dieting typically have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the injections explains the heightened regain.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

People who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"It was like a switch flipping and you become ravenous," described an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if patients have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Use

Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is more common among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers stress that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss hinges on combined lifestyle support.
